Want to develop an online crossword site; which coding language is most appropriate?

Going to start from scratch. Need to know which coding language would be best to build a crossword / scrabble type of site. can it be done with php? multi-player, point scoring, etc. is java necessary for it? answers appreciated, am a total noob but very badly want to do this thing.
