Why do you have to introdue the mutagenic influences? Just leave it as the mutation occurred naturally during mitosis/meiosis. Then you pretty much have the evolutionary answer the age old question - the egg came first. The first chicken egg did not come from a chicken, it came from an "almost-chicken."
